New York City was started with European settlement starting on September 3, 1609 after Henry Hudson found the land while looking for a westerly passage way to Asia. The land was originally inhabited by the Lenape people, Native Americans. In 1626 the construction of Fort Amsterdam began. They used this Fort for the Dutch Fur Trade. In the 1700’s the Lenape population in New York City had gone down to 200.
In the 1800’s New York grew to become an important economic center. In 1825 the Erie Canal opened, that connected the Atlantic to the agricultural markets of the North American’s interior. Then by 1835 New York became the largest city in the United States, beating Philadelphia. In 1886 the Statue of Liberty was re-assembled on her pedestal on October 28.
In the 1900’s New York City came out of WWII as the world’s leading city. 1960’s the battle of gangs, violence, riots, and population decrease began. Street activists and minority groups took these matters into their own hands, like the Black Panthers and the Young Lords. They did this by organizing strikes, garbage offensives, and trying to get city services for the poor areas. By the 1970’s the city got a reputation for being crime-ridden.
